The Sturmgeschütz IV was developed on the chassis of the medium Panzer IV to equip the German army with an assault gun that could also effectively serve as a tank destroyer during the advanced stages of World War II. The Stug IV was fitted with a Stuk40 75mm L/48 high-velocity gun, which was installed in a casemate and protected by an armored shield, capable of penetrating the armor of the main enemy armored vehicles. Distributed to units in the early months of 1944, it supplemented and often replaced the assault gun Stug III, which had experienced a sudden decline in production during 1943 due to increasingly frequent attacks by Allied bombers on German industrial areas. Widely used on the Eastern Front, the Stug IV was also employed by the armored units and anti-tank troops of the Wehrmacht in Normandy, where its low profile made it particularly difficult to identify among the hedgerows of the French countryside.
