The interceptor Lockheed F-104 Starfighter was undoubtedly one of the most famous aircraft in aviation history. It was certainly one of the longest-serving as well: the F-104 was introduced into service by the United States Air Force in the late 1950s and formed the backbone of the fighter forces of various NATO nations for over 40 years.

The first version, the F-104 A, was introduced by the USAF in the late 1950s as an interceptor to counter Soviet bombers for long-range missions. The subsequent version, the F-104C, took on the role of a multi-role and fighter-bomber. Furthermore, the F-104C was used by the USAF in the early stages of the Vietnam War.

The F-104 was developed based on a completely original and innovative aerodynamic concept for its time: small trapezoidal wings mounted mid-fuselage, an extremely long and slender shape, the stabilizer fin mounted at the tail, and a powerful and reliable J-79 jet engine from General Electric capable of delivering exceptional supersonic performance.
