Seagate Expansion Portable (4 TB)

Frage zu Seagate Expansion Portable (4 TB)

User Oxidian

What does the HDD contain? A common Barracuda with SATA connection or there's an USB driver soldered? I want to connect it internally since an internal HDD costs twice as this.

Hi Oxidian,

inside, there is indeed an ordinary Seagate Barracuda tape drive. There is little SATA-to-USB converter card attached to it, but it is not soldered, only attached with aluminium tape. Easy to detach. I removed the drive and put it into my notebook and it works just fine. However, the warranty is probably void by this operation.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

Well spotted Lukas89 - this is what is called professional deformation. I am an IT specialist responsible for a large tape archive hence for the most of the day, I deal with tape drives.

To come back to the original question of Oxidian, the exact model of the hard disk drive inside of that Seagate Expansion is ST4000LM024-2AN1 (as reported by Ubuntu 17.10).

Thanks for your findings Vladimir. I assume, it is the same Barracuda like this one Seagate BarraCuda (4000GB, 2.5", Notebook) (ST4000LM024-2AN17V, firmware 0001)?
