External hard drives

Depending on the application, we recommend that you pay attention to the following characteristics when purchasing an external hard disk:
If you are primarily looking for a portable hard disk or want to exchange data between different devices in an uncomplicated way, a 2.5'' hard disk with power supply via an integrated USB interface is a good choice. These smaller hard disks usually have a storage capacity of up to 5000GB.
When selecting the connection, the speed differences are shown. Most manufacturers today rely on the fast USB 3.0 standard. Newer hard disks already have the universal USB Type-C connection. Individual models also have the option of exchanging data via WiFi.
For home users who want to back up their documents and multimedia data such as holiday photos, we recommend external hard disks with a size of 3.5'' and a storage capacity between 500 and 5000GB. For Mac users, it is recommended to consider products with the fast Thunderbolt 3 connector.
Backup systems with a storage capacity of 5000GB or more and a RAID function are suitable for companies or for backing up large amounts of data. Rack systems can also be considered for larger storage capacities. These offer storage capacities of up to 64 TB and can be installed in a space-saving manner.

10.4 (Tiger)

Version 10.4, called Tiger, was released on April 29, 2005 and includes a system-wide metadata search called Spotlight. With Dashboard, a new component has been added to Exposé that displays small utilities called widgets. Tiger also includes limited support for 64-bit processes (on 64-bit processors) and the new Core Image and Core Video programming interfaces for outsourcing graphical computations to the GPU of the graphics card.
Since version 10.4.4, the system runs on Macs with Intel processors. Updates are offered separately as PowerPC or Intel versions. Tiger is with over two years the longest maintained version of Mac OS X. On November 14, 2007 the last version of Tiger, 10.4.11. was released.

In Leopard, the user interface of the system and especially the Finder has been significantly revised; the concept of virtual desktops has been adopted with spaces from some Linux variants. It also includes Time Machine backup software and Boot Camp, which allows Microsoft Windows to be installed on Intel-based Macs in parallel with Mac OS X. Leopard enables 64-bit operation for applications with a graphical user interface. In addition, it is the first BSD derivative to meet the commercial certification Single Unix Specification '03 of the Open Group and may therefore bear the brand name "UNIX".

10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Snow Leopard was released on August 28, 2009 and, as announced by Apple at WWDC on June 9, 2008, this version of the operating system mainly contains improvements and few new features. The focus is on the improved utilization of current computer hardware - computers with PowerPC processors are no longer supported from this version, so an Intel processor is a condition. With Grand Central Dispatch and the Open Computing Language, a significant increase in performance is to be achieved by combining multi-core main processors with powerful graphics processors (GPGPU) under one central programming interface. There is also extended 64-bit support in the operating system kernel. The Finder has been completely rewritten and is now a 64-bit application. Most of Apple's pre-installed applications now also run in 64-bit mode, but can be started in 32-bit if required. QuickTime X supports modern multimedia codecs better, plus native support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 in Mail, Address Book and iCal. The application has been available for access to the Mac App Store for Snow Leopard since January 6, 2011.

Lion's new features include the Launchpad (an iOS-like list of all installed applications), improved full-screen program handling, Mission Control (a combined view of Spaces, Exposé, Dashboard and running full-screen applications) and FileVault2, which now includes full disk encryption.
Various components of earlier operating system versions, especially the Front Row Media Center interface, a pre-installed Java runtime environment, and the Rosetta emulation software that allowed programs to run on PowerPC processors are no longer supported.
