Description

Toshiba’s N300 NAS Hard Drive offers unprecedented reliability for NAS and other high-performance storage systems. It is optimized to meet the reliability, endurance, performance and scalability requirements of 24-hour x 7-day high-capacity storage for personal, home office and small business use. The N300 is available in capacities of up to 10 TB.

NAS systems in small businesses or creative environments often need to be accessed by several users, at different locations, simultaneously. Therefore today's NAS drives must deliver high data transfer rates and simultaneous upload and download 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Offering high reliability and scalability, N300 drives achieve a max. 180 TB/year workload factor, up to 3 times more than convenient desktop hard drives. Temperature control technology, through the automatic adjustment of rotational speed, prevents the build up of heat during demanding operations resulting in sustained drive performance and long-term reliability. Also, the use of high-endurance components is one of the reasons that the N300 Series offers better durability than other conventional hard disk drives.

Hard drives

A hard disk drive, often abbreviated hard drive or HDD, is a magnetic storage device used for storing data. Data is written on the surface of a rotating disk that is coated with magnetic material and magnetized according to the recorded information. One of the main advantages of hard drives is the low price for capacity. The biggest drawback is its mechanism, which is fault-prone and slower than flash memory. Hard drives are ideal for storing or streaming large amounts of data.

Data storage properties

i

Data storage properties

A data storage device is a device for recording (storing) information (data). Recording can be done using virtually any form of energy, spanning from manual muscle power in handwriting, to acoustic vibrations in phonographic recording, to electromagnetic energy modulating magnetic tape and optical discs. A storage device may hold information, process information, or both. A device that only holds information is a recording medium. Devices that process information (data storage equipment) may either access a separate portable (removable) recording medium or a permanent component to store and retrieve information.

Buffer size

In computer science, a buffer is a region of a physical memory storage used to temporarily hold data while it is being moved from one place to another. Typically, the data is stored in a buffer as it is retrieved from an input device (such as a mouse) or just before it is sent to an output device (such as speakers). However, a buffer may be used when moving data between processes within a computer. This is comparable to buffers in telecommunication. Buffers can be implemented in a fixed memory location in hardware - or by using a virtual data buffer in software, pointing at a location in the physical memory. In all cases, the data stored in a data buffer, are stored on a physical storage media.

Maximum rotation speed
i

Maximum rotation speed

Rotational speed (sometimes called speed of revolution) tells how many complete rotations (i.e. revolutions or cycles) there are per time unit. It is therefore a cyclic frequency, measured in hertz (revolutions per second) in the SI System. The units revolutions per minute (rpm or 1/min) are more common in everyday life.

Rotational speed, for example, how fast a motor is running. Rotational speed and angular speed are sometimes used as synonyms, but typically they are measured with a different unit.

Average latency
i

Average latency

Latency is the delay for the rotation of the disk to bring the required disk sector under the read-write mechanism. It depends on rotational speed of a disk, measured in revolutions per minute (rpm). Average rotational latency is shown in the table below, based on the statistical relation that the average latency in milliseconds for such a drive is one-half the rotational period. Also called rotational latency.

Native Command Queuing
i

Native Command Queuing

In computing, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is an extension of the Serial ATA protocol allowing hard disk drives to internally optimize the order in which received read and write commands are executed. This can reduce the amount of unnecessary drive head movement, resulting in increased performance (and slightly decreased wear of the drive) for workloads where multiple simultaneous read/write requests are outstanding, most often occurring in server-type applications.

NAS

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS not only operates as a file server, but is specialized for this task either by its hardware, software, or configuration of those elements.

In electrical engineering, power consumption refers to the electrical energy over time that must be supplied to an electrical appliance to maintain its operation. The power consumption is usually a result of power used to perform the intended function of the device plus additional "wasted" power that is dissipated as heat, vibration and/or electromagnetic waves.
