PC cases

A computer case (also known as a computer chassis, cabinet, box, tower, enclosure, housing, system unit or simply case) is the enclosure that contains most of the components of a computer (usually excluding the display, keyboard and mouse). A computer case is sometimes incorrectly referred to metonymously as a CPU referring to a component housed within the case. CPU was a common term in the earlier days of home computers, when peripherals other than the motherboard were usually housed in their own separate cases.

PC case design

Despite the specified sizes of the components, the designs of computer housings can differ considerably in some cases. For example, there are large, portrait-format big/full towers, slightly lower midi towers or flat desktop cases, right up to pizza-boxes the size of pizza boxes, which today are mainly used as workstations or servers in professional environments.

microATX, also known as µATX (sometimes transliterated as mATX or uATX on Internet forums) is a standard for motherboards that was introduced in December 1997. The maximum size of a microATX motherboard is 244 mm × 244 mm (9.6 in × 9.6 in), but some microATX boards can be as small as 171.45 mm × 171.45 mm (6.75 in × 6.75 in). The standard ATX size is 25% longer, at 305 mm × 244 mm (12 in × 9.6 in).

Mini ITX
i

Mini ITX

Mini-ITX is a 17 x 17 cm (or 6.7 x 6.7 inches) low-power motherboard form factor developed by VIA Technologies in 2001. Mini-ITX is slightly smaller than microATX and screw-compatible with it. Mini-ITX boards can often be passively cooled due to their low power consumption architecture, which makes them useful for home theater PC systems, where fan noise can detract from the cinema experience. Beside that specific application, they are commonly used in small form factor (SFF) computer systems.

ST-FC9S Alpha Optical Fanless (HTPC)

Great for a silent computer.

One of the few options for a truly silent mid-range computer.

The two lateral sides of the case are used as large heat-sinks
(the case is made to lay flat on your desk, although it can stand on its side as well).

Depending on the motherboard you get there's a good chance that components and connectors on the motherboard will stand in the way of the heat-pipes, which means you'll need a riser - I assume this is what the "Streacom HT4 Thermal Riser" is for but I haven't tested it.

"Streacom ZeroFlex 240" fanless PSU can be an option for a power supply.
