Description

Fast hybrid autofocus "with 179 auto focus points, a large, light-sensitive Exmor CMOS sensor in APS-C format and the powerful Bionz X processor as a guarantee for best image quality.
A look at the technical functions of the a5100 (Alpha 5100) reveals that the little sister of the a6000 doesn't have to hide at all. In fact, thanks to comparable autofocus technology, it can bring almost as fast and precise sharpness to any image. It also has a touch-sensitive touch screen. This means: With the finger, the user decides on the exact focus point in the image.
Sharp, natural action-pictures and detailed portraits are in the way.

highlights

Extremely fast fast hybrid autofocus performance with 6 frames/second
179 car focus points
Brilliant image quality thanks to large 24.3 MP Exmor APS-C HD CMOS sensor
Full HD video quality in XAVC-S (50p)
Thanks to its compact design and easy operation via touchscreen, the a5100 is the perfect match for ambitious amateur photographers who want more than just a smartphone or compact camera. The fast autofocus of the camera is particularly convincing. Nothing escapes the 179 phase detection points on the sensor surface. Once captured, the autofocus follows the football on the pitch, the daughter on the swing or the dog on the meadow. In portraits, the camera focuses directly on the iris in the eye at the touch of a button. Technically perfect photos are guaranteed.
If you like, you can focus or trigger the camera easily via touch screen.
When the subject is captured and the shutter release button is pressed, the 24.3 million pixels of the Exmor APS-C CMOS sensor come into play. They transmit every detail to the Bionz X image processor.
The smart processor, which is also built into the professional camera a7, gives the final touch to photos and videos with discreet improvements and excellent noise reduction.
When it comes to video recording, users not only benefit from the excellent features of the Bionz X processor, but also from the powerful autofocus. It ensures that the focus is exactly on the desired subject - and stays there when movement comes into play. And thanks to its high resolution and sensitivity, filming becomes a reality for casual film-makers, just like in the cinema.
The camera records moving images in the new XAVC S format with 50 Mbit/s in full HD.
In view of the many functions, operation is surprisingly easy. The camera can be operated via touch screen with one finger. The screen on the back can be tilted by 180 degrees. Self-portraits without cut off heads are no longer a problem. Whether selfie or landscape photography: If the photos or videos are on the memory card, the camera can transfer them to an Android or iOS tablet or smartphone at the touch of a button. From there, digital memories can then be sent to the Internet or to your friends and family's email inbox. The simplest way to connect the smartphone to the camera is via NFC technology. If the two devices touch each other, they communicate directly with each other without detours.
Thanks to "Smart Remote Control", the smartphone or tablet functions as a remote trigger with image control on the large display.

Image sensor type

An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image to an electric signal. It is used mostly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. An image sensor is typically a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) active-pixel sensor.

CMOS

Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) is a term for semiconductor devices that use both p-channel and n-channel MOSFETs on a common substrate. CMOS technology refers to both the semiconductor process used to realize integrated digital and analog circuits and a logic family. CMOS technology is the most widely used logic family today and is mainly used for integrated circuits.

APS-C / DX

The DX format is a sensor format of Nikon digital SLR cameras.
The DX format was introduced in 1999 with the Nikon D1. At about 23.7 mm × 15.6 mm, it is smaller than the 35 mm format and also differs from the formats previously used for digital SLR cameras. It is also often referred to somewhat imprecisely as APS-C format.

The American Standards Association (ASA) and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) film speed standards have been combined into the ISO standards. The current International Standard for measuring the speed of color negative film is ISO 5800:1987 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Related standards ISO 6:1993 and ISO 2240:2003 define scales for speeds of black-and-white negative film and color reversal film. This system defines both an arithmetic and a logarithmic scale, combining the previously separate ASA and DIN systems.
Commonly, the logarithmic speed is omitted; for example, "ISO 100" denotes ISO 100/21°.

Lens mount
i

Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.

Maximum aperture

Aperture is a (normally mechanical) device on cameras which can be used to change the light transmission through the optical system (lens). It is usually designed as a lamella screen (also known as an iris screen), in which circularly arranged lamella sheets shift into one another in such a way that the light transmission becomes narrower or wider and thus the incident light beam becomes smaller or larger. The iris is positioned in the beam path in such a way that it only acts as an aperture iris diaphragm and not as a field of view diaphragm.

Secure Digital (SD) is a flash (non-volatile) memory card format developed by Matsushita, SanDisk, and Toshiba for use in portable devices. Today it is widely used in digital cameras, handheld computers, PDAs, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video game consoles. SD card capacities range from 8 MB to 2 GB and from 4 GB to 32 GB for SDHC cards as of 2008.

Image file formats

Image file formats are standardized means of organizing and storing digital images. Image files are composed of either pixel or vector (geometric) data that are rasterized to pixels when displayed (with few exceptions) in a vector graphic display. The pixels that constitute an image are ordered as a grid (columns and rows); each pixel consists of numbers representing magnitudes of brightness and color.

JPEG

In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography (image). The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.

Battery-operated

A rechargeable battery or storage battery is a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They are known as secondary cells because their electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging anything from a button cell to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network. Several different combinations of chemicals are commonly used, including: lead-acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer).

Rechargeable batteries have lower total cost of use and environmental impact than disposable batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes as disposable types. Rechargeable batteries have higher initial cost, but can be recharged very cheaply and used many times.

Power supply
i

Power supply

A power supply is a device that supplies electrical energy to one or more electric loads. The term is most commonly applied to devices that convert one form of electrical energy to another, though it may also refer to devices that convert another form of energy (e.g., mechanical, chemical, solar) to electrical energy. A regulated power supply is one that controls the output voltage or current to a specific value; the controlled value is held nearly constant despite variations in either load current or the voltage supplied by the power supply's energy source.
