Power supply (computer)

A power supply unit (PSU) is the component that supplies power to the other components in a computer. More specifically, a power supply unit is typically designed to convert general-purpose alternating current (AC) electric power from the mains (100-127V in North America, parts of South America, Japan, and Taiwan; 220-240V in most of the rest of the world) to usable low-voltage DC power for the internal components of the computer. Some power supplies have a switch to change between 230 V and 115 V. Other models have automatic sensors that switch input voltage automatically, or are able to accept any voltage between those limits.

Efficiency

Energy conversion efficiency is the ratio between the useful output of an energy conversion machine and the input, in energy terms. The useful output may be electric power, mechanical work, or heat.

80 PLUS certificate
i

80 PLUS certificate

80 PLUS is an initiative to promote energy efficiency in computer power supply units (PSU). It certifies products that have more than 80% energy efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% of rated load, and a power factor of 0.9 or greater at 100% load. That is, PSUs will waste 20% or less electric energy as heat at the specified load levels, thus reducing electricity use and bills compared to less efficient PSUs.

20+4-pin ATX

A 20+4 power cable has two pieces: a 20 pin piece, and a 4 pin piece. If you leave the two pieces separate then you can plug the 20 pin piece into a 20 pin motherboard and leave the 4 pin piece unplugged. The 4 pin piece is not compatible with any other connectors. If you plug the two pieces of a 20+4 power cable together then you have a 24 pin power cable which can be plugged into a 24 pin motherboard.

4+4-pin 12V

Motherboards can come with either a 4 pin 12 volt connector or an 8 pin 12 volt connector. Many power supplies come with a 4+4 pin 12 volt cable which is compatible with both 4 and 8 pin motherboards. A 4+4 power cable has two separate 4 pin pieces. If you plug the two pieces of a 4+4 power cable together then you have a 8 pin power cable which can be plugged into an 8 pin 12 volt connector. If you leave the two pieces separate then you can plug one of the 4 pin pieces into a 4 pin 12 volt connector and leave the other 4 pin piece unplugged.

Power protection features
OCP
i

OCP

The OCP is one of the power supply's protective functions. It stands for Over Current Protection. If a voltage rail draws more current from a power supply than the power supply specification permits, then the OCP intervenes and switches off the power supply.

,
OVP
i

OVP

Over Voltage Protection protects the PC against overly high voltages. To prevent damages to the PC, the power supply turns off when an over voltage is present.

,
UVP
i

UVP

"Under Voltage Protection", or UVP for short, is a protective mechanism for output direct current. The power supply automatically switches off if the voltage converted by the power supply falls below a defined threshold. This protects the power supply and hardware components against damage.

,
SCP
i

SCP

SCP stands for "Short Circuit Protection" and represents an important protective function for power supplies. If a fault leads to a short circuit in the computer, the SCP function switches off the power supply to prevent additional defects to the hardware.

,
OTP
i

OTP

This important protective circuit stands for Over Temperature Protection. Heat is created within the power supply during control actions. It the interior of the power supply becomes overheated, the OTP protects the electronics against damages.

,
OPP
i

OPP

Similar to the OCP, the OPP is one of the protective circuits built into the power supply. OPP stands for Over Power Protection. If a power supply is operated at an excessive power level, the OPP protects the power supply against a technical breakdown.
