Hard drives

A hard disk drive, often abbreviated hard drive or HDD, is a magnetic storage device used for storing data. Data is written on the surface of a rotating disk that is coated with magnetic material and magnetized according to the recorded information. One of the main advantages of hard drives is the low price for capacity. The biggest drawback is its mechanism, which is fault-prone and slower than flash memory. Hard drives are ideal for storing or streaming large amounts of data.

Data storage properties

i

Data storage properties

A data storage device is a device for recording (storing) information (data). Recording can be done using virtually any form of energy, spanning from manual muscle power in handwriting, to acoustic vibrations in phonographic recording, to electromagnetic energy modulating magnetic tape and optical discs. A storage device may hold information, process information, or both. A device that only holds information is a recording medium. Devices that process information (data storage equipment) may either access a separate portable (removable) recording medium or a permanent component to store and retrieve information.

Buffer size
i

Buffer size

In computer science, a buffer is a region of a physical memory storage used to temporarily hold data while it is being moved from one place to another. Typically, the data is stored in a buffer as it is retrieved from an input device (such as a mouse) or just before it is sent to an output device (such as speakers). However, a buffer may be used when moving data between processes within a computer. This is comparable to buffers in telecommunication. Buffers can be implemented in a fixed memory location in hardware - or by using a virtual data buffer in software, pointing at a location in the physical memory. In all cases, the data stored in a data buffer, are stored on a physical storage media.

Disk sector size
i

Disk sector size

In computer disk storage, a sector is a subdivision of a track on a magnetic disk or optical disc. Each sector stores a fixed amount of user data. Traditional formatting of these storage media provides space for 512 bytes or 2048 bytes of user-accessible data per sector. Newer hard drives use 4096 byte (4 KB or 4K) Advanced Format sectors.

Maximum rotation speed
i

Maximum rotation speed

Rotational speed (sometimes called speed of revolution) tells how many complete rotations (i.e. revolutions or cycles) there are per time unit. It is therefore a cyclic frequency, measured in hertz (revolutions per second) in the SI System. The units revolutions per minute (rpm or 1/min) are more common in everyday life.

Rotational speed, for example, how fast a motor is running. Rotational speed and angular speed are sometimes used as synonyms, but typically they are measured with a different unit.

Native Command Queuing
i

Native Command Queuing

In computing, Native Command Queuing (NCQ) is an extension of the Serial ATA protocol allowing hard disk drives to internally optimize the order in which received read and write commands are executed. This can reduce the amount of unnecessary drive head movement, resulting in increased performance (and slightly decreased wear of the drive) for workloads where multiple simultaneous read/write requests are outstanding, most often occurring in server-type applications.

Platter size
i

Platter size

A hard-disk platter (or disk) is a component of a hard-disk drive: it is the circular disk on which the magnetic data is stored. The rigid nature of the platters in a hard drive is what gives them their name (as opposed to the flexible materials which are used to make floppy disk). Hard drives typically have several platters which are mounted on the same spindle. A platter can store information on both sides, requiring two heads per platter.

NAS
i

NAS

Network-attached storage (NAS) is file-level computer data storage connected to a computer network providing data access to a heterogeneous group of clients. NAS not only operates as a file server, but is specialized for this task either by its hardware, software, or configuration of those elements.
