Sara (Julia Stiles) lives in a small town and has a big dream: She wants to become a world famous ballerina. When her mother suddenly dies, Sara has to give up her plans and move in with her father (Terry Kinney) on the rough South Side of Chicago. A white girl in a mostly black neighborhood. Sara feels out of place - until she makes friends with her black classmate Chenille (Kerry Washington) and her pretty brother Derek (Sean Patrick Thomas). There's a radio between Sara and Derek. They discover a common passion for dancing and fall in love. The stronger their relationship becomes, the more the resistance of family and friends grows. Now Sara and Derek must face the biggest challenge in their young lives - staying true to their dreams and each other.
