For me, the Sony z1r are the best closed headphones on the market. These KH are not neutral and don't want to be. They bring a dark sound with a deep bass. I prefer the Sony over the Fostex th-900 and also the Audeze lcd-4, also because they are much more comfortable. The Sony is a brilliant all-rounder with punch. If you only listen to classical music, you might be better off with the (open) Sennheiser HD800s or the Focal Clear/Utopia due to the larger stage (hd800s) or brilliant sound depth and dynamics (focal). But as an all-rounder, the z1r are unbeatable.
My copy had slight irregularities in the leather of the pads.

With the dedicated TA-ZH1ES amplifier, these Sony headphones are really at the top of electrodynamic technology. The product is beautiful and extremely well finished. It comes in a box that exudes luxury; the leather that surrounds the headphones contributes to the feeling of having acquired an exceptional product. As for the listening experience, the sound image is incredibly open and you can hear micro details that you've never heard before. The headphones can be worn for hours without apparent fatigue. There is only one point that could be improved, however: the supplied balanced cable is extremely short, which requires a short distance from the amplifier.

Very nice headphones in a very good workmanship.
Alone the pretty big box mir leather cover makes a lot, although I actually do not use the box, because for transport but a bit too bulky.
The headphones surpass everything I've ever had, they have a nice rather warm sound and the mids and highs are very precise, I like him in all frequency ranges very well and is very well tuned in my opinion. With a good headphone amplifier, he can really let you hear what he can do. I hear tones and sounds in songs that I have heard hundreds of times and these sounds have never struck me. You can hear individual voices and instruments in the background that were never noticed before. I am very convinced of the MDR-Z1R and can only recommend it. The only drawback are the cables, balanced is about 1 meter and the normal with 3.5 jack is 3 meters, I would have preferred rather the other way around.
