I have to admit that at the beginning I didn't want to buy this lens because I didn't think it was necessary in the area I photograph. But I was changed!
How I got this lens was more by chance than anything else. When I bought my new camera equipment (finally switched from Canon to Sony), which meant new camera, new lenses, new tripod, new filters, etc. I knew from reviews how good the lens was supposed to be but couldn't imagine it.
When I arrived at the camera store I trusted, I initially wanted to buy the 16-35mm FE 2.8 GM and the 100-400mm FE 4.5-5.6 GM with the Sony a9. However, it turned out that the 100-400 was not in stock and had to be ordered. However, the salesman, nice as he is, let me test the 70-200mm until the 100-400 variant arrived.
The 70-200mm was in the hands of me and my a9 for a whole week. And I was thrilled from the first photo! The low-light quality of this lens is ingenious. You can make beautiful portraits with it with an increased focal length and it can also be used for new perspectives in landscape photography. If you love wildlife, like I do, I have to say that the image quality is brilliant for this. However, you have to get as close to the animals as some do. In animal parks, however, the focal length will usually be enough.
All I can say about the workmanship is chapeau Sony. It feels good in the hand, the focus ring can be operated smoothly, and a huge advantage is that the lens does not extend when zooming, but retains its size. The controls on the left side of the lens are very handy and can be used very well in a real world situation. The lens hood is even covered with a kind of fabric on the inside, which feels very high-quality (with all GM lenses).
I ended up taking 3 lenses home after that week.

A wise and fully satisfying purchase.
With the focal length doubler you can even upgrade to a 140-400 f5.6 . The concession of almost two stops allows you to play with the wildlife world with a relatively small additional investment, and you keep a brightness equivalent to the standard 400mm and constant! Also you keep a quality superior to mid-range lenses! Just the bohneur (except the weight, ;) it makes the muscle of arms and shoulders)
