Super price-performance ! Super travel zoom ! Sharp lens ! Little distortion !

I bought the travel zoom instead of the Tamron 18-270mm. I was never really satisfied with the Tamron 18-270mm: strong and visible blurring at the edges, strong distortion, the lens barrel slipping out when worn around the neck.
After a very good rating on the internet I bought this Sony travel zoom. After 1500 pictures I can say: My expectations were fully met! Very crisp sharpness up to the edge, little distortion only at the highest WW, no sliding out of the lens barrel when carried around. Focusing also works perfectly with my Alpha-77-II.

    Pro

    • Sharpness to the edge, little distortion (only in the strongest WW)
    • No sliding out of the lens barrel when worn around the neck
    • Very solid, valuable design !

    • 24mm (uncalculated) is sometimes missing...

Sony DT 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 SAM Travel Zoom for Sony Alpha Mount

The Sony DT 18-135mm F/3.5-5.6 SAM has a good build quality, with a metal frame (appears to be aluminium) and high quality plastic for the body. It feels solid and smooth in the hand. Visually, it has a slightly mottled satin black finish, as you would expect from Sony camera bodies.

Exterior features include a handy zoom lock, an AF/MF switch on the left to turn off the SAM, a ridged rubber manual focus ring on the back and a large zoom ring on the front with focal length markings at 18mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 70mm, 100mm and 135mm. Inside the lens, according to Sony's instruction manual, there is an ED element and two aspherical elements. The lens is marked "Made in Japan".

Zooming works smoothly and is appropriately damped in my opinion.
It has a zoom lock, the only engagement point is at 18 mm.

The EXIF data on focal length is recorded correctly at all settings.

Focusing. This lens uses Sony's second generation SAM system for focusing, which is much quieter and faster than the standard "SAM" system. All focusing is done internally, i.e. the filter ring does not move. The focusing ring can be rotated by about 90°, allowing precise manual focusing, although the ring itself does not move during AF operation. The focusing speed is very fast and, with my Sony Alpha 58, also very accurate.

With this lens you can instantly override autofocus and focus manually without having to press any buttons. You simply activate the autofocus with a half-press of the shutter button, release it and manually adjust the focus as desired. The autofocus system is deactivated until you half-press the shutter button again.
