I bought 8 Iron Wolf Pro 16TB disks for an 8-bay raid station. Before I put the raid together, I had each disk certified by the "SoftRAID" software. This task took about a week and it makes you wonder if you should effectively put in this effort. In my opinion, my data is worth this effort and I would rather replace a faulty disk at digitec at the very beginning than later in the middle of a project when the raid is set up.
There are two periods when a hard disk is more likely to fail: When it is new or when it has been used for several months. As a disk is certified with "SoftRAID", the software writes a pattern to each sector on the disk, reads back the pattern and checks it. In total, I had each disk completely checked three times (around 150h total) and none of the disks had a fault at the end. 8 discs, 0 faulty sectors. This result speaks for the quality of the Iron Wolf Pro disks.
