Very good lens, very good value.

Because of the low price, some compromises have to be made, see my "-" points. If you don't want to accept the "-" points, you have to dig far, far deeper into your pocket. :-)

    • Very good price/performance ratio
    • Good handling

    Contra

    • Light intensity, but you know that when you buy and price

Very well made and first enthusiastic results. At this price, it is of course not a professional lens, but on the other hand it covers a range for which you would otherwise need 2 - 3 lenses. As an ambitious amateur, I haven't noticed any limitations yet.

All-round lens for travel and leisure with good price-performance ratio

In English there is the phrase "Jack of all trades, master of one". This also applies very well to the 18-300 from Nikon: it can do a lot, from medium wide-angle to quite long telephoto, plus it has very good optical anti-wobble technology. In addition, it has a compact format for the range of focal lengths.

The downside and the price for the large focal length range of this all-rounder is the image quality: in the corners and peripheral areas it is never really sharp, while the centre delivers good results with slight stopping down. On top of that, the lens is relatively slow in the longer focal length range. Although the very good VR helps to reduce its own wobble, it does not make people or moving animals any sharper. Thanks to the high ISO values achieved by modern cameras, this is no longer as critical as it used to be, but it is still difficult to photograph floodlit football or ice hockey indoors. In addition, the AF of the lens is not extremely fast (admittedly: I am spoilt in this respect), so that fast sports shots in low light are not easy to manage either.

A good travel zoom if you don't want to lug around several lenses, and relatively compact and light. However, the convenience comes at the price of limited speed, AF speed and image quality. 4 stars anyway: the price-performance ratio is very good, the mechanical quality, the compact dimensions and the affordable price make the lens a very good compromise for the hobby photographer despite the limitations mentioned for leisure and travel.

The fact that the scope of delivery does not include a lens hood is something I have noted among the points of criticism, but this is unlikely to interest the majority of the intended audience.
