    Great all-rounder for home use

Has been in use at my home for about two months. The setup was no problem, with WLAN network and current drivers on FreeBSD and Linux. Attention large and heavy, is preferably installed in pairs and on a stable furniture.

    For
office stuff it worked very well. However, one should work from the PC if possible - the touch display on the device is ok, but quite simply too small. Documents are spat out quickly and with near laser quality. Feeding and duplex printing work reliably. The scan feeder is well suited for smaller series, but is not particularly fast and has sometimes pulled in two sheets together. Thus, those who want to scan entire folders should find something else.

For graphics and photos, it is a very good all-rounder, but of course not comparable with plotters or photo printers. Print quality and colours are better than I would have expected from a three-colour inkjet, and in the best case scenario you get photo quality on appropriate paper. Unfortunately, however, the print quality varies greatly at the highest resolution, sometimes adjusting the print heads helps, but not always. Furthermore, the borderless printing distorts the scaling (even on A4), which rarely bothers with photos, but is completely unusable for graphics. Accordingly, only conditionally suitable for the studio, for my needs it is enough.

It is also a pity that the paper tray can not be selected when printing. This makes switching between different types of paper unnecessarily complicated. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the device and would buy it again - an all-purpose printer with many applications for this price.

    Contra

Does not run with refilled cartridges

We bought this printer thinking we could use refilled cartridges like our old HP 8600. It worked fine in the beginning. However, it now refuses to work with them. After some research on the Internet, I found out that HP programs the printer so that it won't work with other cartridges after a while.
Now I should buy cartridge sets for over 100 francs which are produced in Singapore instead of using remanufactured cartridges in Switzerland for 7.- per piece - an ecological and economical nonsense. Even the original cartridges for my last printer were much cheaper.
I only use printers with refillable tanks.

    Pro

    • Actually a good device...but

    Contra

    • Does not accept foreign cartridges
    • Cartridges cannot be refilled
    • Original cartridges more expensive than the predecessor

Good printer for the home office with small weaknesses

Contrary to a comment here, the folder can be freely selected when saving to the computer, there is no default, as long as you do this via the computer and NOT via the display on the printer. Scan to Mail also does exactly what it needs to do, again of course via the software on the computer. I don't know why these two things should be done via the display? It is annoying that the two front flaps in the paper drawers are missing, it is necessary when A3 is inserted, otherwise everything is open and dusty. Call HP Support to solve the problem. It makes NO sense to order a new printer, the flaps are missing there too, no matter which supplier! This will be a general problem in Europe. Otherwise, I am satisfied with the price and performance.

Update 14.08.2023 renewed Call Support with HP (missing paper tray flaps)
Regarding the missing covers for the paper drawers, it now looks like HP no longer produces them and therefore none will be delivered. Not even support was aware that the drawers cannot be closed completely when A3 is inserted! This is also nowhere clearly declared BEFORE the purchase, one notices only at home and when reading the operating instructions. I am now curious to see what happens next and whether I will receive something or have to accept the matter as it is. The case is still with HP.

    Pro

    • A4 and A3 printing and scanning (A3 scan only edition)
    • Good print quality
    • Also accepts paper up to 200g (tray 2 only)
    • Scan to Mail via HP Scan
    • Scan to Folder via HP Scan
    • Same cartridges as my old 8740

    Contra

    • The A3 insert has compartments sticking out, which you don't see before you buy it.
    • Both compartments are missing the flaps to cover them if A3 is inserted.
    • According to HP support, these two flaps are no longer produced.
    • A little big but clear at A3
    • Scan with feeder A4 only
