    conditionally recommendable

Bought the "Garmin inReach explorer".especially with a view to an upcoming kayak expedition in an island world of West Papua not equipped with mobile phone network / internet access, in order to send/receive SMS messages and especially also to receive marine weather report data.

The commissioning of the device, including the registration procedure with Garmin and the installation of software on the smartphone and PC, went largely without a hitch.

The user interface or menu is relatively clear. However, the range of functions regarding navigation tasks is somewhat reduced compared to other GARMIN GPS devices. A good feature is the possibility to install open-source map material worldwide quite easily via the Garmin-inReach website.

Positive: The sending/receiving of messages via the Iridium satellites was flawless (however, only CH has been tested so far).

Completely unsatisfactory are the scope / quality / presentation of the marine weather reports for which a fee is charged. Had tested the situation on the occasion of a kayak tour in the Mediterranean (comparison of data versus reality and other information sources).
Of course, this also significantly worsened the overall value of the Garmin inReach for me.

Highly recommended for travel to remote locations.

The device is intended to be able to stay in touch in remote areas without a cellular network and to send an appropriate message in case of emergency. In combination with a smartphone, creating and sending SMS is also very easy. Maps are pre-installed or can be customized via the Garmin site. Compared to FindmeSpot and similar equipment, messages can also be received. By using the Iridium network, true global coverage is guaranteed (FindMeSpot only has partial coverage).

    Pro

    • Handy
    • Global coverage through Iridium network
    • Long battery life
    • Easy to use
    • Can also receive messages

    Contra

    • Needs a contract
    • (Still) no SwissTopo maps loadable
