Portrait lens with F1.2 and first-class image quality with great cropping and bokeh - simply my favorite XF lens!

Simply became my favorite XF lens! Fantastic optics, already sharp at F1.2 and from F2 crisply sharp over the entire image area.

First-class telephoto lens with 85mm focal length in KB format and large open aperture of
F1.2. Allows great cropping of the subject and has a very pleasant and quiet bokeh thanks to the APD filter. Great as a portrait lens and light telephoto.

For portraits especially outdoors and in front of unstable backgrounds (leaves, forest, flowers etc.) I would recommend the APD version. With the standard XF 56 mm F1.2 version (i.e. without APD) the contrast and phase-detection autofocus work, i.e. the lens focuses faster, but the bokeh is a bit more choppy.

    Pro

    • First-class image quality already at F1.2, from F2 crisp and sharp
    • Large open aperture of F1.2 allows good cropping and low-light shooting
    • Very good build quality
    • 56 mm focal length (85 mm in KB format) great for portraits and quite universal
    • Distortion free, i.e. does not require b&w correction
    • Great with X-T2 or X-Pro2 with 24MP sensor and focus joystick (focus on eyes for portraits)
    • Comes with 3-stop gray filter (stop down for portraits in high light)

    Contra

    • Not splashproof
    • With APD version, only contrast autofocus is usable (accurate, but slower)

    I would buy again

Mostly used the obj. for portrait and flower photography. However, the autofocus is flawless, note that with this obj. a bokeh effect is created. (Deliberate slight exciting blur / soft drawing whatever you call it). Problem-free can and should be slightly stopped down to get great and sharper images. The only drawback is that APD cannot be turned on/off.
With the bokeheffect, however, wonderful pictures can be created. However, the novel techn. feasible "eye detection" can only be achieved by manual handling. Note: a sports lens (With hochgeschwindichkeits focus) it is not, but by the high speed but very fast and great.

    • APD can not be switched off

If I lost it, I would buy it again.

    Absolutely brilliant ...
I often photograph entire sessions (people, portraits) solely with this excellent lens. Extremely sharp (sometimes almost too sharp for faces :-)), a unique bokeh, wonderfully fast, shapely, stable
    ...

    Pro

    • Sharpness, shape, stability, speed ...

    Contra

    • Nothing - the price I see as justified ...
