Forced to throw away almost full toner cartridges

    It is unbelievable and outrageous:

I just tried to put an almost full toner cartridge into my Brother HL-L8260CDW, but the machine still tells me the cartridge is empty.

According to support on the Brother homepage, this
is not an exception, but the normal case: "Please check if you are using a NEW Brother toner cartridge. Swapping toner cartridges from one machine to another or installing partially used toners can cause this problem..... Therefore, always replace toners with new ones and not with cartridges already used from another machine."

Specifically, my old Brother printer broke shortly after I installed new cartridges. I have (independently of having bought a new machine) the same printer model in a second office.
There, the yellow cartridge was just showing as "almost empty". No problem, I thought, and then at least tried to replace the almost empty cartridge with the almost full other cartridge.
But, as shown above: Brother tells me to just use a new cartridge (and throw away the almost full but already partly used one).

The cartridge costs about CHF 80 and simply throwing away new toner (or sending it back for recycling) is not an option at all.
