Scans crooked and fails because of bad software.

Quality of the device itself is very good for the price. Touchscreen is more useful than one might think. Still, among my document scanners, this is the least user-friendly. As other users have commented, the direct scan functions are very inconsistent (with cloud and USB drive). Sometimes creating a searchable PDF or auto-detecting page size is possible, sometimes not. The software for the Mac is more reminiscent of that of our first Canon flatbed scanner from 1998, and the storage options for custom scan programs on the computer are very modest. OCR text recognition is incredibly slow compared to today's state of the art, and to top it off, is not always reliable.

    What bothers me the most:

    - I have yet to get the scanner to scan an A4 page straight. Despite having corrections enabled, all documents are slightly crooked.
    - The scanner often cuts off text at the bottom of documents with narrow margins.
    - It is suggested by the manufacturer that the scanner is designed for heavy loads. This is only partly true. What you only discover when you take a closer look at the software and nowhere else is that the relatively expensive roller and feeder kit is only designed for 50,000 pages. I find this shocking, as in comparable scanners of this class, like for example the ix500 from Fujitsu, the roller kit is designed for 200'000 pages and also costs even less.
    - When scanning via WLAN, the device never keeps the stated speeds.
    - Document scanners normally recognise the outline of the document in automatic mode and cut it out. If the scanner feeds the document crooked and the descew function does not succeed (which it tends to do anyway), you get a grey square with the document in the middle.

I can only conditionally recommend the device.

a technically good scanner with mediocre software.

Technically good scanner with good quality scans. Carrier sheets for deviating formats or plastic cards require an adjustment of the scan settings (tedious). Favorites can be set, though it still takes four clicks to trigger a scan with a saved favorite (I'm still at a loss as to why one-click scanning can't happen with a saved favorite). The feature of scanning to the cloud without need for a local computer is helpful, but also has its pitfalls in software control: OCR runs through Brother's servers and requires multiple clicks in the process, so you can't just start the scan and walk away, but have to stick around and click repeatedly. However, Brother Switzerland's technical support is very quick to respond and helpful in finding better, if not really good, solutions (due to the limitations of the software's functionality, not everything is possible).
In summary, a technically good scanner with mediocre software.

Highly recommended at the current price!

Perfect document scanner for private households. Feeds the paper properly, recognises blank pages and can straighten crooked paper. However, the scanner is probably unsuitable for professional use in offices: Although the scanner can be logged into the WLAN, scanning to an FTP or online storage locations can only be achieved by registering with Brother. However, if the scanner is in the same room, the scan can simply be triggered directly from the PC/Mac. Use a Mac and can recommend the following: Set up ControlCenter to scan directly to an app. For me it is PDFScanner, which automatically runs an OCR over it.

    Pro

    • fast + quiet
    • clean scans
    • Price/performance = top!

    Contra

    • Included software still uses TWAIN driver under macOS (ControlCenter2)
