Which amplifiers would fit

I have ordered this product but I find that the sound is weak with the built-in pre-amp. Should the 2 switches (on the turntable and the speakers) be in the PHONO position?

Do I understand correctly that if the speakers and turntable are bought separately, they are cheaper than the set? Where is the difference here?
