The iMac monitors (2010 and older) also accepted a DP signal at their Thunderbolt 1 connection.
This is no longer possible with all newer ones, only real Thunderbolt works.
As far as I know, there are no USB-C to Thunderbolt adapters; a USB-C port is always required that is also capable of Thunderbolt (recognisable by the lightning symbol next to the port). There are new Windows notebooks that can

Should work - have MacBook Air with Thunderbolt port and external monitor via HDMI - all good but when I connect my Thunderbolt display to MacBook Pro and then connect external monitor with HDMI from Thunderbolt display via Thunderbolt port (daisy chain) HDMI monitor does not work :(
