The iMac monitors (2010 and older) also accepted a DP signal at their Thunderbolt 1 connection.

According to the vintage of the IMac, it is certainly a 4K model and therefore the IMac cannot be used as a display for the MacBook.
Should work - have MacBook Air with Thunderbolt port and external monitor via HDMI - all good but when I connect my Thunderbolt display to MacBook Pro and then connect external monitor with HDMI from Thunderbolt display via Thunderbolt port (daisy chain) HDMI monitor does not work :(
