I have now contacted Nokia support, who kindly replied promptly: yes, it is also possible to make calls with a cable headset.

Either via card reader (microSD) or USB cable.
I haven't tried it but I'd be very surprised, I only use it to receive SMS, I don't even send them because it's so painful to use the keyboard!
