Can the maximum length of 51cm be compressed to 45cm or is the backpack too "stable" for that? Easyjet allows hand luggage with a length of 45cm ;-)

When the compartment on top of the backpack is empty, it can be "compressed" to just under 45cm.

Is it possible to extend the camera compartment from the 15cm depth to 16cm in a single place? have a slightly longer lens

I think you can. But since the opening to the main compartment is on the inside, i.e. at the back, you will feel that something doesn't quite fit. It's more likely to press on the back than on the other side. I would pack the lens lengthways.
