Yes, you need the Lightning-to-USB 3 adapter from Apple (digitec item 5718376). It is important that you supply the MPK with power via this adapter, because the iPad itself only provides little power for external devices at the Lightning port. A similar question has already been answered in detail by @lustig12. To summarise briefly: The MPK Mini is purely an input device and has neither its own "intelligence" nor does it produce sounds. It only serves to operate suitable software (sequencer, DAW, sampler etc.) on your PC or Mac more comfortably than via mouse/keyboard.
