Graphics cards
A video card, video adapter, graphics accelerator card, display adapter, or graphics card is an expansion card which generates output images to a display. Most video cards offer added functions, such as accelerated rendering of 3D scenes and 2D graphics, video capture, TV-tuner adapter, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoding, FireWire, light pen, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors (multi-monitor). Other modern high performance video cards are used for more graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games. |

Graphics processing unit
i
Graphics processing unitA graphics processing unit or GPU (also occasionally called visual processing unit or VPU) is a specialized circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory in such a way so as to accelerate the building of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. Modern GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics, and their highly parallel structure makes them more effective than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms where processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel. In a personal computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be on the motherboard, or in certain CPUs, on the CPU die. |

Lithography
i
LithographyPhotolithography (or "optical lithography") is a process used in microfabrication to selectively remove parts of a thin film or the bulk of a substrate. It uses light to transfer a geometric pattern from a photo mask to a light-sensitive chemical "photoresist", or simply "resist," on the substrate. |

Processor clock frequency
i
Processor clock frequency
In electronics and especially synchronous digital circuits, a clock signal is a particular type of signal that oscillates between a high and a low state and is utilized like a metronome to coordinate actions of circuits. Although the word signal has a number of other meanings, the term is here used for "transmitted energy that can carry information". |

Number of shaders
i
Number of shadersA shader in the field of computer graphics is a set of software instructions, which is used by the graphic resources primarily to perform rendering effects. Shaders are used to allow a 3D application designer to program the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) "programmable pipeline", which has mostly superseded the older "fixed-function pipeline", allowing more flexibility in making use of advanced GPU programmability features. |

Video memory
i
Video memoryVideo memory is a term generally used in computers to describe some form of writable memory, usually RAM, dedicated to the purpose of holding the information necessary for a graphics card to drive a display device. In modern 3D graphics cards, the video memory may also hold 3D vector data, textures, backbuffers, overlays and GPU programs. |

Video memory clock
i
Video memory clockClock speed of the graphics memory, which is calculated depending upon type of memory (GDDR5, etc.) from the effective memory clock. A graphics card with effective memory clock of 975MHz and GDDR5 memory type has, thus a memory clock of 3.9 GHz since GDDR5 allows a 4X data transfer per clock cycle. |

Memory Interface
i
Memory InterfaceThe memory interface of a graphics card is the connection between graphics chip and graphics memory. The wider the memory interface, i.e. the more data lines available, the more data can be transferred to and from the graphics memory simultaneously. Figuratively one can imagine this as a data highway with several lanes. |
256 bit
|
Memory Bandwidth
i
Memory BandwidthThe theoretical performance is given as Memory Bandwidth, which depends on the width of the memory interface, the graphics memory technology (SDR, DDR, etc) and the graphics memory clock. |

Graphics card cooling system
i
Graphics card cooling systemVideo cards may use a lot of electricity, which is converted into heat. If the heat isn't dissipated, the video card could overheat and be damaged. Cooling devices are incorporated to transfer the heat elsewhere. |

OpenGL versionOpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a standard specification defining a cross-language, cross-platform API for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics. The interface consists of over 250 different function calls which can be used to draw complex three-dimensional scenes from simple primitives. OpenGL was developed by Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) in 1992 and is widely used in CAD, virtual reality, scientific visualization, information visualization, flight simulation, and video games. |

Ein wahrer Genuss.…more
