Description

Powerful 153-point autofocus for outstanding scene capture performance in a wide range of shooting situations: The D500's Multi-CAM 20K autofocus module has 153 densely arranged focus measuring fields (99 of which are cross sensors) that cover a very large part of the image field. Even fast motifs can be precisely captured. The light sensitivity of the AF has been extended to -4 LW for the center AF area and to -3 LW for all other AF areas, allowing the autofocus to be used even with extremely low light or low-contrast subjects. A new AF engine and subject recognition through the RGB sensor with approximately 180,000 pixels also contribute to the exceptional autofocus capabilities in a variety of subject situations. High-speed serial photography with approx. 10 frames per second and up to 200 consecutive shots (RAW, 14 bit, lossless compressed):
The D500 enables rapid image series with a frame rate of approx. 10 frames per second and a series length of up to 200 shots (JPEG or RAW 14 bit, lossless compressed), without the recording speed dropping. Even objects in motion can be tracked exactly within the wide field of view at such high frame rates, with the advantages of the quiet viewfinder image and the largest currently available. viewfinder field of approx. 30.8° (diagonal). 4K-UHD video, suitable for professional productions:
The D500 can record video in 4K UHD resolution (3840 × 2160, 30p/25p/24p) as well as 1080/60p resolution up to 29 min 59 s long. Simultaneous output via HDMI is possible. The camera can also be used to generate 4K UHD time-lapse films. In Full HD or HD mode, the Digital Image Stabilizer reduces the effects of camera shake in the horizontal, vertical and rotational directions when shooting movies hands-free. Active D-Lighting preserves the details in the lights and shadows for videos with natural rendition of the respective lighting situation. New Expeed 5 image processing engine for sensitivities up to ISO 51,200, expandable to Hi 5 (equivalent to ISO 1,640,000):
The D500's new Expeed 5 image processing engine, which is also used in the D5, enables a standard ISO range of 100 to 51,200, which can be extended down to Lo 1 (ISO 50) and up to Hi 5 (ISO 1,640,000). Image processing guarantees exceptionally high-resolution images and effectively reduces image noise even at high ISO settings. The RGB light metering sensor with 180,000 pixels, also new, increases the performance of the Scene Recognition System. A flicker reduction for photos reduces the occurrence of exposure differences under lighting with flickering light sources. SnapBridge support allows the camera to connect to mobile devices using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi:
Once the SnapBridge application is installed, the D500 can establish a permanent connection to a mobile device via Bluetooth or Wlan (available as a free download). This results in a wide range of functions: Images captured with the D500 can be automatically transferred to the mobile device and also automatically uploaded and saved to NIKON IMAGE SPACE. You can also browse the photos stored in the camera on the mobile device and embed location, date and time information in images. SnapBridge thus opens up new possibilities for using images taken with the D500.

Sensor properties

Image sensor resolution
i

Image sensor resolution

The image sensor resolution results from the number of pixels in millions. For most applications, a resolution of 12-16 megapixels is sufficient. A higher resolution has advantages, especially in post-processing, as more image information is available.

i

Image sensor type

An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image to an electric signal. It is used mostly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. An image sensor is typically a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) active-pixel sensor.

More information...

i

CMOS

Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) is a term for semiconductor devices that use both p-channel and n-channel MOSFETs on a common substrate. CMOS technology refers to both the semiconductor process used to realize integrated digital and analog circuits and a logic family. CMOS technology is the most widely used logic family today and is mainly used for integrated circuits.

APS-C / DX

The DX format is a sensor format of Nikon digital SLR cameras.
The DX format was introduced in 1999 with the Nikon D1. At about 23.7 mm × 15.6 mm, it is smaller than the 35 mm format and also differs from the formats previously used for digital SLR cameras. It is also often referred to somewhat imprecisely as APS-C format.

ISO light sensitivity (auto)

The American Standards Association (ASA) and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) film speed standards have been combined into the ISO standards. The current International Standard for measuring the speed of color negative film is ISO 5800:1987 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Related standards ISO 6:1993 and ISO 2240:2003 define scales for speeds of black-and-white negative film and color reversal film. This system defines both an arithmetic and a logarithmic scale, combining the previously separate ASA and DIN systems.
Commonly, the logarithmic speed is omitted; for example, "ISO 100" denotes ISO 100/21°.

ISO light sensitivity (manual)
i

ISO light sensitivity (manual)

The ISO 5800 standard defines the light sensitivity of film material.
For both scales: the higher the number, the more light-sensitive the film. For linear ASA scaling, a double value corresponds to twice the sensitivity. In the logarithmic DIN scale, an increase of 3° corresponds to a doubling.
In photography, doubling the light sensitivity of the film material means that under given lighting conditions the exposure time can be halved to avoid camera shake or the lens can be closed one f-stop further to achieve a greater depth of field.

Lens mount
i

Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.

i

Maximum aperture

Aperture is a (normally mechanical) device on cameras which can be used to change the light transmission through the optical system (lens). It is usually designed as a lamella screen (also known as an iris screen), in which circularly arranged lamella sheets shift into one another in such a way that the light transmission becomes narrower or wider and thus the incident light beam becomes smaller or larger. The iris is positioned in the beam path in such a way that it only acts as an aperture iris diaphragm and not as a field of view diaphragm.

Phase-based
i

Phase-based

The older passive method is phase comparison, a method that is more complex and also requires an additional sensor, but in principle requires less computing power and can also determine the focusing direction with the first measurement.
The method is derived from the purely optical split image indicator, an aid that was already used as an accessory in the purely mechanical cameras of the 1960s. In the center of the focusing screen, which was viewed through the viewfinder, two unmatted halves of the circle were attached so that two fields moved towards each other during manual focusing until they finally fitted exactly together during focusing. When the first phototransistors and microchips were available, it was only a matter of time before two sensor lines were constructed from them, which could judge the position of the two fields at vertical edges.

Image file formats

Image file formats are standardized means of organizing and storing digital images. Image files are composed of either pixel or vector (geometric) data that are rasterized to pixels when displayed (with few exceptions) in a vector graphic display. The pixels that constitute an image are ordered as a grid (columns and rows); each pixel consists of numbers representing magnitudes of brightness and color.

JPEG

In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography (image). The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.

User Y_Fleury

I'm going to buy a d500 but I'm not sure about the lens. First, I already have a 200-500. But now I'm hesitating between the kit lens (16-80) which is a dx lens and the 24-120 which is a fx lens.

I guess it depends on what you need, the 16-80mm is going to be a lot wider and has the added benefit of the 2.8 aperture on the wide angle. Plus it is a lot lighter as well. I would suggest the 24-120 only if you really need the extra reach on the tele end.
