The D3500's large DX format sensor captures 24.2 megapixels of detailed photos and Full HD movies - even in low light. In combination with the imaging performance of your NIKKOR lens, you will succeed in creating artistic portraits with delicate background blur. It's simple.

From the first light to the last dance
Catch everything. The magic of midnight as well as the colours of the new day. ISO sensitivity range from 100 to 25,600 lets your photos and movies shine in any light.

More to love
The camera's high-precision autofocus system delivers razor-sharp images while capturing up to five beautiful frames per second. Every moment belongs to you - whether you're zooming in on an intimate moment or capturing the action of raging kids in dramatic wide-angle.

Aaaaand - action!
Taking perfect pictures is only half the fun. With the D3500, you can record high-quality Full HD movies with great detail and frame rates up to 60p. Thanks to the camera's wide ISO sensitivity range, you can film even in cloudy skies and at night.

The joy of change

Firm hold
The D3500's deep grip gives your hand a perfect grip. This camera fits snugly in the hand and offers stability when selecting the image section. The generous key arrangement simplifies operation. Thanks to the large battery capacity, users can record from dawn to sunset. And beyond that.

Always the best shot
Achieve more. With the automatic mode, you can take perfect pictures in D-SLR quality - in the twinkling of an eye. Or use the Guide mode to take even better pictures. The ultimate assistant, Guide mode shows you precisely what camera settings you need to make to capture stunning photos and movies in your own personal style.

Create something special
For moments that deserve a little more effort, you can activate a whole series of camera-internal effects before you take photos or movies. Or adjust the appearance of your photos after you've taken them. The high-resolution LCD monitor with 921,000 pixels allows you to select image details with perfect clarity and check images.

Not to hide
Why wait? The SnapBridge app for iOS and Android enables a constant connection between the camera and a smartphone or tablet. Impress with images in D-SLR quality that can be split in a jiffy.

The adventure can begin

Image sensor resolution
i

Image sensor resolution

The image sensor resolution results from the number of pixels in millions. For most applications, a resolution of 12-16 megapixels is sufficient. A higher resolution has advantages, especially in post-processing, as more image information is available.

i

Image sensor type

An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image to an electric signal. It is used mostly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. An image sensor is typically a charge-coupled device (CCD) or a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) active-pixel sensor.

More information...

CMOS
i

CMOS

Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) is a term for semiconductor devices that use both p-channel and n-channel MOSFETs on a common substrate. CMOS technology refers to both the semiconductor process used to realize integrated digital and analog circuits and a logic family. CMOS technology is the most widely used logic family today and is mainly used for integrated circuits.

i

APS-C / DX

The DX format is a sensor format of Nikon digital SLR cameras.
The DX format was introduced in 1999 with the Nikon D1. At about 23.7 mm × 15.6 mm, it is smaller than the 35 mm format and also differs from the formats previously used for digital SLR cameras. It is also often referred to somewhat imprecisely as APS-C format.

ISO light sensitivity (auto)

The American Standards Association (ASA) and the Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) film speed standards have been combined into the ISO standards. The current International Standard for measuring the speed of color negative film is ISO 5800:1987 from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Related standards ISO 6:1993 and ISO 2240:2003 define scales for speeds of black-and-white negative film and color reversal film. This system defines both an arithmetic and a logarithmic scale, combining the previously separate ASA and DIN systems.
Commonly, the logarithmic speed is omitted; for example, "ISO 100" denotes ISO 100/21°.

ISO light sensitivity (manual)
i

ISO light sensitivity (manual)

The ISO 5800 standard defines the light sensitivity of film material.
For both scales: the higher the number, the more light-sensitive the film. For linear ASA scaling, a double value corresponds to twice the sensitivity. In the logarithmic DIN scale, an increase of 3° corresponds to a doubling.
In photography, doubling the light sensitivity of the film material means that under given lighting conditions the exposure time can be halved to avoid camera shake or the lens can be closed one f-stop further to achieve a greater depth of field.

Lens mount
i

Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.

Phase-based
i

Phase-based

The older passive method is phase comparison, a method that is more complex and also requires an additional sensor, but in principle requires less computing power and can also determine the focusing direction with the first measurement.
The method is derived from the purely optical split image indicator, an aid that was already used as an accessory in the purely mechanical cameras of the 1960s. In the center of the focusing screen, which was viewed through the viewfinder, two unmatted halves of the circle were attached so that two fields moved towards each other during manual focusing until they finally fitted exactly together during focusing. When the first phototransistors and microchips were available, it was only a matter of time before two sensor lines were constructed from them, which could judge the position of the two fields at vertical edges.

Image file formats

Image file formats are standardized means of organizing and storing digital images. Image files are composed of either pixel or vector (geometric) data that are rasterized to pixels when displayed (with few exceptions) in a vector graphic display. The pixels that constitute an image are ordered as a grid (columns and rows); each pixel consists of numbers representing magnitudes of brightness and color.

JPEG

In computing, JPEG is a commonly used method of lossy compression for digital photography (image). The degree of compression can be adjusted, allowing a selectable tradeoff between storage size and image quality. JPEG typically achieves 10:1 compression with little perceptible loss in image quality.

JPEG compression is used in a number of image file formats. JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and other photographic image capture devices; along with JPEG/JFIF, it is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the World Wide Web. These format variations are often not distinguished, and are simply called JPEG.

Battery-operated

A rechargeable battery or storage battery is a group of one or more electrochemical cells. They are known as secondary cells because their electrochemical reactions are electrically reversible. Rechargeable batteries come in many different shapes and sizes, ranging anything from a button cell to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network. Several different combinations of chemicals are commonly used, including: lead-acid, nickel cadmium (NiCd), nickel metal hydride (NiMH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and lithium ion polymer (Li-ion polymer).

Rechargeable batteries have lower total cost of use and environmental impact than disposable batteries. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes as disposable types. Rechargeable batteries have higher initial cost, but can be recharged very cheaply and used many times.
