Nikon AF-S VR DX 16-80mm f/2.8-4 E ED

Description

Powerful DX zoom lens with a focal length of 16 to 80 mm and a luminous intensity of 1:2.8 to 1:4, its latest technology and compact design make it the ideal all-round lens for demanding photographers.
The versatile 5x zoom covers a focal length range of 24 to 120 mm in full size, while the high luminous intensity opens up new shooting opportunities. With the Nikon Image Stabilizer, the images remain blur-free. The electromagnetic aperture control ensures precise exposure even at high frame rates.
With a well-balanced tube in lightweight construction and a protective fluorine coating, this lens meets the needs of all photographers who place high demands on their equipment.

Powerful 5x zoom lens with a wide range of focal lengths from 16mm to 80mm (equivalent to 24mm to 120mm FX format) and a high luminous intensity of 1:2.8mm to 1:4mm, the zoom range from wide-angle to telephoto covers most shooting situations with ease, from stunning landscape shots to individual portraits.
Compact and lightweight: the unsurpassed mobile lens.
The housing weighs only 480 g, impresses with its compact mass and is perfectly balanced on the camera housing.
High luminous intensity: enables a pleasant background soft focus, optimum exposure under low light conditions and a clear separation of foreground and background.
Has a luminous intensity of 1:2.8 with a focal length of 16 mm (corresponds to 24 mm for FX format) and 1:4 with 80 mm (corresponds to 120 mm for FX format).
Image Stabilizer (VR): Minimizes the effects of camera shake, allowing shots with up to 4 LW longer exposure times.
The image stabilizer works very quietly even when filming.

Advanced optical design: four ED glass lenses and three aspherical lenses provide sharp, brilliant images.

Nanocrystalline coating: reduces ghost images and scattered light, even in backlighting, thus providing high detail contrast.

Silent Wave Motor (SWM): provides fast, quiet and precise autofocus.

Electromagnetic aperture control: consistently precise exposure, especially at high frame rates.
Fluoride coating: actively repels water, dust and dirt without compromising image quality.
This coating improves durability and makes it easier to clean the glass without damaging the surface.

Camera lens properties

i

Camera lens properties

A camera lens (also known as photographic lens, objective lens or photographic objective) is an optical lens or assembly of lenses used in conjunction with a camera body and mechanism to make images of objects either on photographic film or on other media capable of storing an image chemically or electronically.
While in principle a simple convex lens will suffice, in practice a compound lens made up of a number of optical lens elements is required to correct (as much as possible) the many optical aberrations that arise. Some aberrations will be present in any lens system. It is the job of the lens designer to balance these out and produce a design that is suitable for photographic use and possibly mass production.
A lens may be permanently fixed to a camera, or it may be interchangeable with lenses of different focal lengths, apertures, and other properties.

With photo lenses, a further distinction is made according to the angle of view which determines the focal length for a given image format.

Telephoto lens
i

Telephoto lens

In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length. This is achieved by incorporating a special lens group known as a telephoto group that extends the light path to create a long-focus lens in a much shorter overall design. The angle of view and other effects of long-focus lenses are the same for telephoto lenses of the same specified focal length. Long-focal-length lenses are often informally referred to as telephoto lenses although this is technically incorrect: a telephoto lens specifically incorporates the telephoto group.

Wide angle lens
i

Wide angle lens

In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane. This type of lens allows more of the scene to be included in the photograph, which is useful in architectural, interior and landscape photography where the photographer may not be able to move farther from the scene to photograph it.

Lens mount
i

Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.

Focal length

The focal length of an optical system is a measure of how strongly it converges (focuses) or diverges (diffuses) light. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length.

Focal Length APS-C / DX (35mm film equivalent)

In photography, the 35 mm equivalent focal length is a measure that indicates the angle of view of a particular combination of a camera lens and film or sensor size. The term is useful because most photographers experienced with interchangeable lenses are most familiar with the 35 mm film format.

Image stabilization
i

Image stabilization

Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera during exposure. Specifically, it compensates for pan and tilt (angular movement, equivalent to yaw and pitch) of a camera or other imaging device. It is used in image-stabilized binoculars, still and video cameras, and astronomical telescopes. With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto) lenses. With video cameras, camera shake causes visible frame-to-frame jitter in the recorded video. In astronomy, the problem of lens-shake is added to by variations in the atmosphere over time, which cause the apparent positions of objects to change.

Focusing

i

Focusing

In geometrical optics, a focus, also called an image point, is the point where light rays originating from a point on the object converge. Although the focus is conceptually a point, physically the focus has a spatial extent, called the blur circle. This non-ideal focusing may be caused by aberrations of the imaging optics. In the absence of significant aberrations, the smallest possible blur circle is the Airy disc, which is caused by diffraction from the optical system's aperture. Aberrations tend to get worse as the aperture diameter increases, while the Airy circle is smallest for large apertures.

i

Minimum aperture f/

In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane. The aperture determines how collimated the admitted rays are, which is of great importance for the appearance at the image plane. If an aperture is narrow, then highly collimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus at the image plane. If an aperture is wide, then uncollimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus only for rays with a certain focal length. This means that a wide aperture results in an image that is sharp around what the lens is focusing on and blurred otherwise. The aperture also determines how many of the incoming rays are actually admitted and thus how much light reaches the image plane (the narrower the aperture, the darker the image for a given exposure time).

I got a small question : is this lens weather resitant as the 24-120 or not?

Accepted answer

To give a more accurate answer than the helf wrong one from David Lim:

According to nikon NO lens is proofed against any specific amount of water or anything else. Not even the supertele's, so if you ever have an issue regarding moisture it isn't officially covered but Nikon in switzerland is extremly forthcomming in that respect.

To this lens specificaly I wouldn't trust it in rain, since it's a zoom that extends and sucks air in, when zoomed in.
However it's build quite robust and some dropplets won't hurt it, if you watch out, that they aren't sucked in and it should last you quite a while.

Note: When I talk about rain, I mean really nasty rain combines with wind in which most people won't photograph anyway.

AF-S VR DX 16-80mm f/2.8-4 E ED

super Objektiv für DX

super tolles Objektiv.
