The volca series combines the classical technologies of groove machines, samplers and other sound engines of the past with contemporary dance music. Now the series has been supplemented by an FM sound engine.
volca fm is a 3-part digital FM synthesizer. It reproduces the sound engine of a classic FM synth and is fully compatible with the original. Its multi-layered FM sounds can be effectively manipulated via the intuitive volca interface without having to be familiar with the details of FM synthesis. The 16-step sequencer has been enhanced with new functions such as WARP ACTIVE STEP and PATTERN CHAIN and delivers even more complex rhythm patterns.
The advent of the FM (Frequency Modulation) sound generation marked an important turning point in synthesizer history. The metallic, sharp sounds of electric pianos, synth basses and other instruments have been very popular throughout the music scene since the 1980s until today. volca fm reproduces the sound engine of the classic digital synthesizer, which suddenly made FM synthesis famous, in a unique, perfect way. Its six operators and 32 algorithms are fully compatible with the original and can even process files in SYS-EX/SYX format of the classic DX7.
The volca fm's easy-to-use MODULATOR/CARRIER knobs make FM sound processing understandable and applicable for everyone - the control movements affect several parameters simultaneously and allow spontaneous sound modifications. And FM enthusiasts can dive deep into the world of parameters via the menu. A comprehensive list of parameters is enclosed for orientation and guidance.
Besides the perfect reproduction of the classic sound engine, volca fm also offers a dense chorus effect, which gives the sounds an enormous depth and significantly expands the sound potential.
With the 16-step loop sequencer you can record your performance directly on the touch panel keyboard, so that no fleeting inspirations are lost. Up to 16 sequence patterns can be stored and recalled in memory.
The Motion Sequence function records your control movements and varies the sound by changes over time. This allows loops to be worked out in detail and combined into original live performances.
In addition to the Active Step function, which allows you to skip steps in a sequence, the volca fm offers new functions for creating irregular rhythms. If less than 16 steps are created with Active Step, this can be compensated with the Warp Active Step function and the playback time can be extended to 16 steps. By synchronizing the playback to another device of the volca series, you can deliberately distort the step timing and develop really unconventional performances.
As the first device of the volca series, volca fm is equipped with an arpeggiator. In combination with a motion sequence, extremely eccentric rhythm patterns can now be generated.
As an extension, the Pattern Chain function allows you to combine up to 16 sequences, play them back in sequence and create chains of 32, 64 or even 256 steps.
With its sync connector, volca fm easily connects to Korg's groove machines such as the electric or SQ-1 to synchronize sequencer playback and hold extended sessions. And if you connect two volca fm devices, you can copy the sound programs and sequence data to each other and create complete volca fm clones.
The volca can also be used as a sound module for DAW and MIDI controllers via the MIDI IN jack.…more
