What should you look out for when buying a TV and which innovations are out there? Hbb-TV, 3D, USB recording and streaming of online content has become the norm for most TVs. However, OLED technology, ultra-high definition resolution and Curved Design are still brand-new and not a standard feature. But how good are these innovations? OLED technology is synonymous with intense, lifelike colours, high contrast ratio, deepest black and excellent motion clarity. When compared to LCD and Plasma TVs, the difference is clearly visible. Ultra-high definition resolution (also known as 4K) equals 3840x2160 pixels – that’s four times more pixels than current Full HD resolution. This is a particular advantage when it comes to self-produced content as many cameras and video cameras are already UHD enabled. There are also movies out there in 4K; however, regular cable TV is not yet broadcast in 4K. UHD TVs are equipped with an upscaler that upscales Full HD content to 4K quality. Curved LED TVs are not only easy on the eye but also at the forefront of the trend to use large TVs in small rooms. The curvature increases the sense of contrast and spatial depth and enables viewers to see the full picture even at short viewing distance.

i

Display properties

A display device is an output device for presentation of information for visual, tactile or auditory reception, acquired, stored, or transmitted in various forms. When the input information is supplied as to electrical signal, the display is called electronic display. Electronic displays are available for presentation of visual, tactile and auditory information.

Screen size (inches)
i

Screen size (inches)

The size of a display is typically indicated by the distance (in inches) between two opposite corners. One problem with this method is that no distinction is made between aspect ratios although the area decreases with the same diagonal the less square the display is. For example, a 21" 4:3 aspect ratio display has an area of approximately 211 square inches, while a 16:9 21" monitor has an area of only approximately 188 square inches.

TV Tuner

i

TV Tuner

A television tuner converts an RF television transmission into audio and video signals which can be further processed to produce sound and a picture. Different tuners are used for different television standards such as PAL, NTSC, ATSC, SECAM, DVB-C, DVB-T, ISDB, T-DMB, open cable.

VHF/UHF TV tuners are rarely found as a separate component; however cable boxes serve as a separate tuner, and have channel 3/4 outputs so they can serve as a cable-ready emulator for TVs that aren't cable-ready, and often feature composite, S-video, or component video outputs so they can be used on video monitors that do not have a TV tuner, or ones whose tuner is not working. They are usually bundled with a monitor, VCR, and/or DVR. However, they do exist for use by members of the television industry, and may be purchased on Internet Auction Sites, such as eBay.

TV tuners are also installed on PCI computer expansion cards (or in USB device, or even as a part of video card), together with a DSP, allowing a personal computer to display and/or capture television channels. A number of earlier models were stand-alone tuners, designed to deliver TV picture through a VGA connector. This allowed viewing television on a computer display, but, of course, did not allow recording programs by the PC.

DVB-S2

Digital Video Broadcasting - Satellite - Second Generation (DVB-S2) is an enhanced specification to replace the DVB-S standard, developed in 2003 and ratified by ETSI (EN 302307) in March 2005. The development of DVB-S2 coincided with the introduction of HDTV and H.264 (MPEG-4 AVC) video codecs.

VGA
i

VGA

A VGA connector as it is commonly known (other names include RGB connector, D-sub 15, mini sub D15 and mini D15) is a three-row 15 pin DE-15. There are four versions: original and DDC2 pinouts, the far older and less flexible DE-9 connector, and a Mini-VGA used for laptops.
The common 15-pin VGA connector found on most video cards, computer monitors, and other devices, is almost universally called "HD-15". HD stands for "high-density", which distinguishes it from connectors having the same form factor but only 2 rows of pins. However, this connector is often incorrectly referred to as a DB-15 or HDB-15.[citation needed]
"VGA connectors" and their associated cabling are almost always used solely to carry analog component RGBHV (red - green - blue - horizontal sync - vertical sync) video signals along with DDC2 digital clock and data.
Where size is a constraint (such as laptops) a mini-VGA port can sometimes be found in place of the full-sized VGA connector.

Component video (YPbPr) jack

Component video, commonly referred to as component or component input/output, is used to transmit the video signal from HDTV receivers or DVD players to the corresponding display devices (monitors or projectors). In contrast to older variants that were used exclusively in the professional sector in the past, the current variant of component video variant used on home cinema devices does not transmit YUV but only YPbPr color-coded video data.

i

Energy efficiency class

According to several different EU Directives (92/75/CEE, 94/2/CE, 95/12/CE, 96/89/CE, 2003/66/CE, et alia) most white goods, light bulb packaging and cars must have an EU Energy Label clearly displayed when offered for sale or rent. The energy efficiency of the appliance is rated in terms of a set of energy efficiency classes from A to G on the label, A being the most energy efficient, G the least efficient. The labels also give other useful information to the customer as they choose between various models. The information should also be given in catalogues and included by internet retailers on their websites.

Stiftung Warentest Logo
