"A Way Out" is a cooperative third-person adventure revolving around two characters who meet in prison: Leo, who has been there for some time, and Vincent, who has just arrived. The two meet and help each other out of one or the other difficult situation before they decide to work together... and even become friends to a certain extent.
The game must be played by two users - either via split screen in "couch co-op" mode or in online co-op mode. There is neither a single player story nor the possibility to play alone with an AI ally. This is a conscious design decision, as users will often be together in the same situations, but often experience them from a different perspective.
Depending on the story mission or situation, users can also take on different roles/tasks. For example, one user may need to distract a guard while the other sneaks past it to steal a particular item undetected. In other situations, both users will have to work much more closely together to master a task. For example, you must help yourself to climb over an obstacle, or together break open a door for which one person alone may not be strong enough.
