Graphics card properties

A video card, video adapter, graphics accelerator card, display adapter, or graphics card is an expansion card which generates output images to a display. Most video cards offer added functions, such as accelerated rendering of 3D scenes and 2D graphics, video capture, TV-tuner adapter, MPEG-2/MPEG-4 decoding, FireWire, light pen, TV output, or the ability to connect multiple monitors (multi-monitor). Other modern high performance video cards are used for more graphically demanding purposes, such as PC games.

Graphics processing unit

i

Graphics processing unit

A graphics processing unit or GPU (also occasionally called visual processing unit or VPU) is a specialized circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory in such a way so as to accelerate the building of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. Modern GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics, and their highly parallel structure makes them more effective than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms where processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel. In a personal computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be on the motherboard, or in certain CPUs, on the CPU die.

Video memory

i

Video memory

Video memory is a term generally used in computers to describe some form of writable memory, usually RAM, dedicated to the purpose of holding the information necessary for a graphics card to drive a display device. In modern 3D graphics cards, the video memory may also hold 3D vector data, textures, backbuffers, overlays and GPU programs.

Memory Interface
i

Memory Interface

The memory interface of a graphics card is the connection between graphics chip and graphics memory. The wider the memory interface, i.e. the more data lines available, the more data can be transferred to and from the graphics memory simultaneously. Figuratively one can imagine this as a data highway with several lanes.

Graphics card cooling system

Video cards may use a lot of electricity, which is converted into heat. If the heat isn't dissipated, the video card could overheat and be damaged. Cooling devices are incorporated to transfer the heat elsewhere.

i

DirectX version

DirectX is a collection of COM-based programming interfaces (API) for multimedia-intensive applications (especially games) on the Windows platform and is also used on the Xbox game console.

The DirectX collection of software components covers almost the entire multimedia area. It is primarily used for displaying complex 2D and 3D graphics, but also offers support for audio, various input devices (for example mouse, joystick) and network communication.

i

OpenGL version

OpenGL (Open Graphics Library) is a standard specification defining a cross-language, cross-platform API for writing applications that produce 2D and 3D computer graphics. The interface consists of over 250 different function calls which can be used to draw complex three-dimensional scenes from simple primitives. OpenGL was developed by Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) in 1992 and is widely used in CAD, virtual reality, scientific visualization, information visualization, flight simulation, and video games.

Grafikkarte NVIDIA Quadro M4000 (8GB, PCI-E x16)
