Macro lens with image stabilizer that sets new standards in performance and versatility.

The EF 100 mm 1:2.8L IS USM is part of Canon's professional L-Series and is one of the first lenses with an image stabilizer that detects horizontal and vertical camera movements - ideal for shooting from close range.

Highlights:

Powerful macro lens of the professional Canon L-Series
Hybrid image stabilizer for up to four steps longer shutter speeds
image reproduction up to 1:1 scale
UD lens
dust and moisture repellent sealing
switch for limiting the setting range with three positions
Circular aperture with nine lamellas for effective bokeh effect
Ring-USM autofocus motor

Hybrid image stabilizer
The new Image Stabilizer is optimized for use in a macro lens. In addition to detecting changes in the angle of view and compensating for them, as is the case with most image stabilizers, the lens also corrects shifts.
This allows for longer shutter speeds: up to two levels at 1x magnification, up to three levels at 0.5x magnification and up to four levels at normal shooting.

Ultra-low dispersion (UD) lens for excellent image quality
The integration of a UD lens effectively eliminates chromatic aberrations.
It is largely responsible for outstanding image quality with high resolution, pronounced contrast and excellent colour reproduction.

Attractive reproduction in blurred areas due to circular aperture with nine blades

The circular aperture provides an attractive, uniform background blur for shots with wide apertures, ideal for capturing wide apertures where subjects need to stand out from the background.

Fast and quiet autofocus
The Ring-USM (ultrasonic motor) ensures fast and almost silent autofocus. Alternatively, manual focusing can be performed at any time without turning off the AF function.
The lens has a close-up adjustment limit of approx. 0.3 m.

Camera lens properties

i

Camera lens properties

A camera lens (also known as photographic lens, objective lens or photographic objective) is an optical lens or assembly of lenses used in conjunction with a camera body and mechanism to make images of objects either on photographic film or on other media capable of storing an image chemically or electronically.
While in principle a simple convex lens will suffice, in practice a compound lens made up of a number of optical lens elements is required to correct (as much as possible) the many optical aberrations that arise. Some aberrations will be present in any lens system. It is the job of the lens designer to balance these out and produce a design that is suitable for photographic use and possibly mass production.
A lens may be permanently fixed to a camera, or it may be interchangeable with lenses of different focal lengths, apertures, and other properties.

Macro lens
i

Macro lens

"Macro" lenses specifically designed for close-up work, with a long barrel for close focusing, are one of the most common tools for macrophotography. (Nikon designates such lenses as "Micro" because of their original use in making microforms, but most lens makers use the term "Macro" or "Makro.") These lenses are optimized for high reproduction ratios. Most modern macro lenses can focus continuously to infinity as well, using complex focusing mechanisms that alter the optical formula. In most cases these lenses provide excellent optical quality when used for normal photography, although a macro lens may be optimized to provide its best performance at its highest magnification. True macro lenses, such as the Canon MP-E 65 mm f/2.8, can achieve higher magnification than life size, enabling photography of the structure of small insect eyes, snowflakes, and other minuscule objects.

Telephoto lens
i

Telephoto lens

In photography and cinematography, a telephoto lens is a specific type of a long-focus lens in which the physical length of the lens is shorter than the focal length. This is achieved by incorporating a special lens group known as a telephoto group that extends the light path to create a long-focus lens in a much shorter overall design. The angle of view and other effects of long-focus lenses are the same for telephoto lenses of the same specified focal length. Long-focal-length lenses are often informally referred to as telephoto lenses although this is technically incorrect: a telephoto lens specifically incorporates the telephoto group.

Lens mount
i

Lens mount

A lens mount is an interface — mechanical and often also electrical — between a photographic camera body and a lens. It is confined to cameras where the body allows interchangeable lenses, most usually the single lens reflex type or any movie camera of 16 mm or higher gauge. Lens mounts are also used to connect optical components in instrumentation that may not involve a camera, such as the modular components used in optical laboratory prototyping which join via C-mount or T-mount elements.

Focal length

The focal length of an optical system is a measure of how strongly it converges (focuses) or diverges (diffuses) light. A system with a shorter focal length has greater optical power than one with a long focal length.

Focal Length APS-C / DX (35mm film equivalent)

In photography, the 35 mm equivalent focal length is a measure that indicates the angle of view of a particular combination of a camera lens and film or sensor size. The term is useful because most photographers experienced with interchangeable lenses are most familiar with the 35 mm film format.

Image stabilization
i

Image stabilization

Image stabilization (IS) is a family of techniques used to reduce blurring associated with the motion of a camera during exposure. Specifically, it compensates for pan and tilt (angular movement, equivalent to yaw and pitch) of a camera or other imaging device. It is used in image-stabilized binoculars, still and video cameras, and astronomical telescopes. With still cameras, camera shake is particularly problematic at slow shutter speeds or with long focal length (telephoto) lenses. With video cameras, camera shake causes visible frame-to-frame jitter in the recorded video. In astronomy, the problem of lens-shake is added to by variations in the atmosphere over time, which cause the apparent positions of objects to change.

Internal focusing
i

Internal focusing

Internal focusing, abbreviated IF, is a type of lens design in which the distance is not adjusted by shifting the entire lens, but only one or more lenses within the lens. The remaining lenses, especially the front lens, maintain their distance from the image capture plane (filament net, film or image sensor), which does not change the overall length of the lens.

Focusing

i

Focusing

In geometrical optics, a focus, also called an image point, is the point where light rays originating from a point on the object converge. Although the focus is conceptually a point, physically the focus has a spatial extent, called the blur circle. This non-ideal focusing may be caused by aberrations of the imaging optics. In the absence of significant aberrations, the smallest possible blur circle is the Airy disc, which is caused by diffraction from the optical system's aperture. Aberrations tend to get worse as the aperture diameter increases, while the Airy circle is smallest for large apertures.

Minimum aperture f/
i

Minimum aperture f/

In optics, an aperture is a hole or an opening through which light travels. More specifically, the aperture of an optical system is the opening that determines the cone angle of a bundle of rays that come to a focus in the image plane. The aperture determines how collimated the admitted rays are, which is of great importance for the appearance at the image plane. If an aperture is narrow, then highly collimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus at the image plane. If an aperture is wide, then uncollimated rays are admitted, resulting in a sharp focus only for rays with a certain focal length. This means that a wide aperture results in an image that is sharp around what the lens is focusing on and blurred otherwise. The aperture also determines how many of the incoming rays are actually admitted and thus how much light reaches the image plane (the narrower the aperture, the darker the image for a given exposure time).
