Screen size (inches)

The size of a display is typically indicated by the distance (in inches) between two opposite corners. One problem with this method is that no distinction is made between aspect ratios although the area decreases with the same diagonal the less square the display is. For example, a 21" 4:3 aspect ratio display has an area of approximately 211 square inches, while a 16:9 21" monitor has an area of only approximately 188 square inches.

Image resolution

Image resolution is a colloquial measure of the image size of a raster graphic. It is indicated by the total number of pixels or by the number of columns (width) and rows (height) of a raster graphic.

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio of an image is the ratio of the width of the image to its height, expressed as two numbers separated by a colon. That is, for an x:y aspect ratio, no matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the height is measured using this same length unit, the height will be measured to be y units. Aspect ratios are mathematically expressed as x:y.

Refresh rate

The refresh rate (most commonly the "vertical refresh rate", "vertical scan rate" for CRTs) is the number of times in a second that a display hardware draws the data. This is distinct from the measure of frame rate in that the refresh rate includes the repeated drawing of identical frames, while frame rate measures how often a video source can feed an entire frame of new data to a display.

For example, most movie projectors advance from one frame to the next one 24 times each second. But each frame is illuminated two or three times before the next frame is projected using a shutter in front of its lamp. As a result, the movie projector runs at 24 frames per second, but has a 48 or 72 Hz refresh rate.

Brightness

Brightness is an attribute of visual perception in which a source appears to emit a given amount of light. In other words, brightness is the perception elicited by the luminance of a visual target. This is a subjective attribute/property of an object being observed.

Colour depth

The color depth determines an essential property of raster and vector graphics: the differentiation of all brightness and color values.
The maximum possible number of (color) gradations is given in bits and thus designates the color depth of an image. These gradations represent a scale on which the actual color information is stored. The color depth is therefore the mathematical basis of the actual color information. In practice, an image never has the amount of colors that the range of this scale (color depth) provides.

A color depth of 1 bit would mean that in one color channel (usually red, green and blue on the computer screen) exactly two states would be possible. As an example, this would be black and red for the color channel red. With a color depth of 2 bits 4 states would be possible, for example black, dark red, medium red and light red. With the usual color depth of 8 bits, 28 = 256 states and thus just as many individual red tones are possible.

Energy efficiency class

According to several different EU Directives (92/75/CEE, 94/2/CE, 95/12/CE, 96/89/CE, 2003/66/CE, et alia) most white goods, light bulb packaging and cars must have an EU Energy Label clearly displayed when offered for sale or rent. The energy efficiency of the appliance is rated in terms of a set of energy efficiency classes from A to G on the label, A being the most energy efficient, G the least efficient. The labels also give other useful information to the customer as they choose between various models. The information should also be given in catalogues and included by internet retailers on their websites.
