DJI Osmo Pocket: Time for GoPro to pack in?
DJI, mainly known as drone manufacturer, is entering GoPro terrain. The Chinese company's newest device, the Osmo Pocket, looks promising. But is it better than a GoPro?
Wow, this thing is tiny – that was my first thought after Denny Phan, product manager aka my personal gadget supplier, handed me the new Osmo Pocket. This camera is just about the size of my hand. Impressive, considering it’s equipped with a mechanic gimbal. The GoPro doesn’t have a gimbal but isn’t much smaller.
DJI Osmo Pocket: a tiny little thing
Similar and still a lot different from the GoPro
Although they're constructed in different ways, their comparable specifications make these two cameras appear rather similar at first glance – and yet, they're actually very different. Both cameras record in 4k at 60 fps, are equipped with the 1/2.3" sensor (6.17 x 4.55 mm) of the same size, can take 12 megapixel photos and deliver perfectly stabilised videos. But each camera has its strengths, especially in specific areas of application.
In my opinion, the GoPro is ideal for action sports, capturing unique stunts and tricks from the craziest of perspectives. With all the mounting options it offers, such as for surfboard, chest, suction cup on a smooth surface and many more, the GoPro is incredibly versatile.
The Osmo Pocket is designed as a lifestyle camera for vloggers and anyone else who likes to record videos. It's compact and equipped with a rotatable camera for selfies, ensuring it's a camera that becomes your everyday companion. They say: The best camera is the one you have with you. Right? Osmo Pocket is definitely made to go anywhere with you.
Of course, both devices make it easy to share videos on your mobile phone and via social media channels in no time at all.

Review to follow ...
So far, I've only unpacked and briefly switched on my new camera. Now I want to find out how well it actually performs. What I'm pretty sure of is that the gimbal will deliver much better results than the software stabilisation provided by the GoPro.

The demand is very high. Pre-order to be supplied as fast as possible.
Availability on digitec
According to our product manager Denny Phan, you'll have to be patient a little longer. So far, we've only been able to deliver very few devices. «More should follow in the next few days, but we don't yet know how many exactly. Pre-ordering is definitely a wise choice, as there will be a shortage for some time to come.»
