Without any premonition or background knowledge - except for the knowledge that Xavier Gens (HITMAN - EVERYONE DIES ALONE) is involved as executive producer - I went to see the end-time horror drama HOSTILE by director Mathieu Turi.
Right at the beginning of the film, you realise that it's a post-apocalyptic end-times setting. But how did this epidemic come about in the first place? This question is answered, even if only partially, in the form of flashbacks.
Assuming that the film, like MAD MAX, BOOK OF ELI, RESIDENT EVIL: EXTINCTION or the video game DAYS GONE and FALLOUT, is set in the end times, I was initially somewhat disappointed, as the majority of the film takes place in the aforementioned flashbacks, i.e. in the past.
HOSTILE has very little to do with horror and a thriller and is rather a relationship drama. Entertaining but rather calm and leisurely staged, I already stamped the film as average and not necessarily worth seeing. But the twist towards the end of the film - which some may see coming - is well resolved in my eyes and was unexpected for me. The ending definitely enhanced the film for me. Together with the film music by newcomer Frédéric Poirier, I found HOSTILE all in all, especially because of the ending, very worth seeing and successful. However, a little more depth would have been desirable.
Definitely not a mainstream film, but a special pearl in this film genre. Recommended for all those who are not on the same level as THE AVENGERS.
