Many functions, simple setup and operation, network and cloud functions.

The multifunction device is quite large for an inkjet. Setup via WLAN was very easy. The touch display menu guides you through setup in pictures and text instructions.

    Pro

    • Lots of network and cloud functions for scanning.
    • Easy setup
    • Easy handling of ink cartridges
    • Firmware update directly from the device

    Contra

    • Size of the device
    • When filled with A4, the paper cassette protrudes from the device

    Good for the home office

The good news first: quite usable, extremely inexpensive and really fast. Scanning with the Windows Scan App works on Windows 10 (WIA and TWAIN drivers are available) and also via iOS and Android. The included scanning software for Windows is miserably cumbersome. I personally prefer a cool scan utility on Windows (free, naps2.com), incl. scan duplex and OCR.

FAX not tested. Speed dial setup looks cumbersome though.

NA YES: Scan-to-USB (directly on the device) only works to a limited extent. It only worked for me with a very old USB stick (124 Mb FAT). The stick can also NOT be addressed remotely.

IMMEDIATELY: There's not much to configure. But if there's already a web interface (as always, no certificates are installed at Canon, so Windows reports the configuration page as insecure), then you should also be able to configure everything there. Unfortunately, this is not the case. For various configuration functions you have to fiddle around with the small 2.5" screen on the device itself. Too bad.

BAD: Scan with selection on the device itself (shortcut keys) to a target drive (W10) can be forgotten. The authentication methods (SMBv1, mNTLMv1) supported by this Canon MB5150 (market launch was 2016) are so old that they are no longer permitted by Windows 10 for security reasons (purely as an experiment, I switched on SMBv1 on the PC and set mBTKNv1 or Code 2. Code 2: this immediately led to errors and warnings in the event log, up to "due to a critical error, Windows will be restarted in 1 minute"), so fingers off with wanting to save directly from the scanner to PC drives (or NAS). On an older SALT fibrebox with USB stick it still worked for me, but who wants that. Firmware updates for this Canon never existed and never will. Just old.

Otherwise, this very inexpensive printer/copier/scanner/FAX is still well suited as a home office device.

    Pro

    • Speed Scan/Copy/Print (except the first page, which takes forever)
    • Price
    • low height
    • Double-sided scan (rare!) and print XXXXXL ink tanks

    Contra

    • No single sheet feeder
    • Very limited compatibility with Windows
    • No borderless printing
    • USB stick support obsolete
    • Configuration not remote
    • No more firmware updates
    • Canon Scan SW cumbersome, but there are good alternatives
    • Nothing with MS or Google Cloud, just "Canon Cloud".
