Phablets are better than you might think – pre-order the Samsung Galaxy Note8 before 14 September and we’ll give you a Samsung DeX Station for free.
The display – more than a design statement
The 6.3“ Super AMOLED Quad HD screen is more than a design statement. Samsung have decided to go without home button and front logo, so images and videos can be viewed on almost the entire front of the device. Watching a video and chatting with friends at the same time? No problem! This large screen is ideally suited to use two apps in parallel with the multi-window mode.
The screen can be unlocked with fingerprint, iris scanner or face recognition. Plans are that the phone can be used with the intelligent virtual assistant «Bixby» by the end of 2017.
The intelligent S Pen – It’s all about user experience
The versatile S Pen features make the Samsung phablets more intuitive and easier to use. A wide range of features and apps can be used with the S Pen (see techlife.samsung.com). With the revised S Pen, the following tasks are easy and quick:
- Taking notes whenever you want: With the «screen off memo» function, you can even take notes if your screen is turned off or locked. The phablet and S Pen are both IP68 certified, so you can even take notes in the rain.
- Sending handwritten or drawn objects to your friends, for instance via Whatsapp.
- Selecting image, text or video content and saving it as image or GIF file. Capturing screenshots or YouTube video sequences has never been so easy.
- Translating words directly from within the web content based on Google Translate. So far restricted to words (not sentences).
The first Galaxy dual camera – taking pictures with OIS and 2x optical zoom
Note8 features Samsung’s first dual camera, which will offer the best ever image quality. Galaxy S8 had a remarkable DxOMark score of 88 and the Galaxy Note8 camera is set to do even better: With Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) on both cameras and two lenses, the phablet features 2x optical zoom.
Dual SIM – have a second SIM card in the hybrid slot
The Galaxy Note8 features a hybrid slot, so you can choose between either a microSD card or an extra SIM. The second card can be activated and deactivated easily in the phone settings, making it possible to avoid roaming costs or enjoy your end of the work day without being disturbed.
The Samsung DeX station – Will the Note8 replace PCs?
Working from wherever you want requires sophisticated hardware and software. The solutions Microsoft (October 2015) and HP (August 2016) offered didn’t catch on – probably because some popular apps didn’t work on mobile desktops. Samsung’s bundle Galaxy Note8 (or Galaxy S8) and DeX station could make the breakthrough when it comes to mobile-to-desktop experience.
Equipped with the Galaxy Note8 (or Galaxy S8), the Samsung DeX station, a HDMI cable and a compact mouse and keyboard, all you need is a monitor or TV and you’re ready to go. All apps and files installed on the Galaxy S8 are available in the desktop view. With data security in mind: Work files don’t need to by synced via mobile network.
The most popular apps are already available in a desktop-optimised version. This includes Google Chrome, Google Drive, Google Docs, several Adobe apps, the Microsoft Office applications (see the note below) as well as all pre-installed Samsung apps. All apps can be used on any size of window and it’s also possible to have several apps open at the same time and switch between them. Apparently, Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) also allows accessing Windows.
Note: Microsoft Office applications can be used for free on devices no larger than 10.1”. A subscription is necessary for usage on any larger device such as monitors. Without subscription, documents are available in read-only mode and can’t be edited or saved.
